The Federal Trade Commission embellished their service to the American People in a report to Congress about their 2005 FY accomplishments. This is not really news of course as most agencies give half ass and piss poor performance and then give themselves raving reviews in reports to Congress. But it gets worse in that The Federal Trade Commission stated as one of its accomplishments and justifications for increased taxpayer's monies that it helped the Hurricane Katrina and Rita victims. In fact here is their exact words to Congress;
In FY 2005, the FTC took action in the Hurricane Relief Efforts.
"The FTC was quick to respond to protect consumers made vulnerable by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The FTC joined a federal task force and became the central clearinghouse for consumer complaint data for all levels of law enforcement. Consumers were encouraged to file complaints by phone, by mail, or on the FTC Web site.”
Wow, they put up a G-darn website to alert consumers about such things? Dah, power was out, no web access? No phones and no mail? This utterly ridiculous; must be nice to sit in an office sipping coffee and waiting for the phone to ring when you know damn good and well it won't.
" In addition through its gasoline monitoring project, the FTC reviewed data on retail and wholesale gasoline prices from various locations across the country and used this information to identify possible anticompetitive conduct during the short-term gasoline product shortage.”
What? Reviewed data? Screw that, as every consumer in America reviewed data every time they went to buy gasoline? Give me a break, this is not news, it is not an accomplishment and it sure as hell is not a reason for a 13 million dollar increase in FY 2007 for the FTC. Do these morons (opinion, actually
"The FTC investigated possible illegal practices and brought law enforcement actions, as appropriate. The agency offered consumer education in print, on its Web site, and through broadcast public service announcements to prevent victims from being injured by the frauds and scams that proliferated following the disasters. Beyond the immediate need to prevent fraud and deception, the FTC also offered materials to assist hurricane victims in rebuilding their financial lives.”
Well that sounds all warm and fuzzy, but the truth is the FTC did nothing more than a little PR Campaign and pretended to do something. May I ask you if that is worth 223 million dollars, which was their FY2007 budget request? The embellishment, Misrepresentation and Consumer Fraud in my opinion at the Federal Trade Commission needs to stop and it needs to stop now? So where does the buck stop anyway? Consider this in 2006.
