I read a poem once that really depicted what chivalry and courtesy is all about, and thought it could help me convey my personal opinion on the matter.
"A tiny thing is chivalry, yet bigger than the sky; A thing which you can give away but money can never buy,
It's like a fragile flower to the desert breeze unfurled And warms the strangest places in this cold and thoughtless World… Its Joe the bus man waiting for a lady old and gray… It's Jones the banker helping a blind beggar to have a better day.
It's guiding strangers though it takes you off your course A mile…It's thanking folks in lowly jobs for service with A smile.
It's asking - not commanding - and it's sharing Someone's load…It's going back to move the rock that Blocks another's road… A priceless, endless treasure that's Been here since life began…You see, Courtesy is the link That binds the brotherhood of man…” -Nick Kenny

As I was always taught, you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, but that's just the way I see it.
