Just Another One Minute Assessment: A Sabbatical Or Early Retirement?

Is the phenomenon of a sabbatical more common in Europe than in Northern America? I would say so, but I can't really find statistics about the topic.

The choice to select either one is not really equal. But if you would be able to choose, what would you prefer?

First, an early retirement is not open for everybody. Unfortunately. That is the first difference. If you choose the "carpe diem” strategy you will certainly choose the first option; who knows what can happen in the future. You live now, and now is the opportunity.

One issue with a sabbatical is the following. It is heavy!

Imagine yourself on the white beach, palm trees, coconuts, no computers, no communication, only the life with some dear ones, close friends. And that for six month. A year maybe.

Imagine...three months in a tropical rainforest. Meeting tribes, a complete other world. Every now and then you call some finds when you're near a small town. You are lucky if they have internet.

Imagine...you are to hike from north to south, from Europe to China. It takes you seven months.

Or imagine that you stay at home, and you will swallow those books you've always wanted to read. You could be more off the world than in the previous situations.

But then, you face the clock. Again. You put back your watch where it was. And you start thinking about returning. If this has been a settled deal, part of the contract you have nothing to worry

about. You think.

But try to remember the day you left. The first day of freedom. Freedom for a year. And than back caught by the rhythm of the day. Of course, everybody is happy that you're back. But before you know it the sabbatical is history. Over and a forgotten. What's left is a simple impression. A picture that is on your desk.

If you can enjoy it like that, the choice shouldn't be difficult. If you're in the position to do so. If you can see the sabbatical as a looong holiday, why not go for it.

If you are afraid that a long holiday will change you, you'd better choose for (an early) retirement. The problem you will face coming back -- entering your old suit -- is not worth it. In that case you shouldn't call it sabbatical, but a premeditated resign. Just be honest to yourself.
